Sometimes a mod is not available directly on CurseForge but can still be used in your modpack or personal installation. This guide will show you how to manually install external mods into the CurseForge launcher safely and correctly.

Before You Start

Make sure you have:
  • The [CurseForge Launcher] installed
  • A Minecraft profile already created
  • The correct Minecraft version for the mod
  • The correct mod loader installed: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt (if supported)

Step 1 — Download the External Mod

Download the mod .jar file from the mod creator’s official source.
Common trusted locations include:

  • Official developer websites
  • GitHub releases
  • Modrinth
  • Discord release channels
  • Patreon or Ko-fi pages from the creator
  • Important:
Only download mods from trusted sources. Avoid random file-sharing websites or unofficial reposts.

Step 2 — Open the CurseForge Launcher

  1. Open the [CurseForge Launcher]
  2. Click on Minecraft
  3. Select the modpack or profile you want to install the mod into

Step 3 — Open the Modpack Folder
  1. Click the 3 dots beside the Play button
  2. Select: Open Folder
This will open your modpack directory.

Step 4 — Locate the Mods Folder
Inside the opened folder:

  1. Find the folder named: mods
  2. Open it
If the folder does not exist, create a new folder named: mods

Step 5 — Install the Mod
  1. Drag the downloaded .jar mod file into the mods folder
  2. Wait for the file transfer to complete
Do NOT unzip the mod unless specifically instructed by the mod developer.

Step 6 — Launch Minecraft
  1. Return to the CurseForge launcher
  2. Press Play
  3. Minecraft should now load with the installed mod

Troubleshooting
Game Crashes on Startup
Possible causes:

  • Wrong Minecraft version
  • Wrong mod loader (Forge/Fabric/etc.)
  • Missing dependencies
  • Incompatible mod version
Always check the mod page for requirements.

Mod Does Not Appear In Game
Make sure:

  • The mod file ends in .jar
  • The mod is inside the correct mods folder
  • The mod supports your Minecraft version
  • You installed it into the correct profile

Missing Dependency Error
Some mods require additional libraries or API mods such as:

  • Fabric API
  • GeckoLib
  • Architectury API
  • Balm
  • Cloth Config
Install the required dependency mods the same way by placing them into the mods folder.

Recommended Safety Tips
  • Keep backups of your modpack before adding new mods
  • Add mods one at a time when testing
  • Avoid downloading from suspicious websites
  • Read mod descriptions carefully
  • Keep Java and your launcher updated

Optional: Checking Logs
If Minecraft crashes:

  1. Open your modpack folder
  2. Open the folder: logs
  3. Check:latest.log
This file often shows which mod caused the issue.

Final Notes

Manual mod installation is completely normal in the Minecraft modding community, especially for:

  • Beta mods
  • Private mods
  • Patreon exclusives
  • Development builds
  • Mods hosted outside CurseForge
As long as versions and dependencies match, external mods generally work the same as mods installed directly through the launcher.
